In Finland, it is recommended for those planning a pregnancy and in early pregnancy folic acid supplement 400 µg/day, preferably the beginning about 2 months before getting pregnant Adjust your total amount according to these instructions (also consider other preparations/foods).

EFSA keep for adults tolerable upper limit 1,000 µg/day folates from all additional and supplemented sources(applies to both folic acid and 5-MTHF forms such as Quatrefolic). If you are also taking a multivitamin or pregnancy supplement, check your total intake.

Don't start or stop folate supplement on its own. In conjunction with low-dose methotrexate folic acid/folate is often prescribed separately to reduce harm, while in cancer treatments. The timing and preparations are strictly controlled. Follow the instructions of the treating provider.

High folate intake can to correct blood count and thus covers up B12 deficiency hematological signs, although neurological symptoms may progress. If you suspect B12 deficiency (e.g. vegan diet, long-term metformin/PPI),check B12 level before starting folate or talk to a professional.
