The active forms of vitamin folic acid found in food are called folates. Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin (vitamin B9) that is needed for cell division and blood cell formation. Its need increases during pregnancy. Humans cannot produce folic acid or folate in their bodies, so we have to get them from food or nutritional supplements.

Folate is found in many green vegetables, which is where the name of the vitamin comes from ( folium = leaf). However, vegetables may quickly lose some of their folate at room temperature, for example, and boiling vegetables in water takes up to 95% of it.

Adequate intake of folate is especially important for women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, because folate promotes tissue growth during pregnancy.
